Happy New Year!

I had this wacky idea to be on two wheels for New Year’s Eve, and my friends are on the fun side of crazy, so we slapped on our lighting systems and did a night ride out at Duthie Hill Park to ring in 2010. Rain, mud, fog and pandemonium all made appearances--so much fun!! The ride was followed by great food, beverages and baked goods. Who knows? Maybe it will be a new tradition!

Here’s Cooper waiting in the Toaster while we’re prepping to head out.

Beware the fog!

It was a great time and glad I left my whining at home, sucked it up, and joined you on our 2 wheels for some muddy, wet fun in the dark!  More night riding please!  Happy 2010!

That picture in the fog is so cool!  Glad it was a great start to 2010!

I’m into this! And it is roughly half the reason I bought an engine-powered vehicle - the other half is also mountain-bike-related. Of course having the bus has basically killed my road riding (commuting), but I like trail riding better anyway - I digress. None of my riding pals are ever up for a night ride, even the so-called “hardcore” guys - PANSIES! So I had to get a vehicle so I can drive myself to the trail, and that is exactly what I will do. My question is… I have a Nightrider Mi-Newt LED headlamp. Pretty bright in terms of commuting lights, but I’m not sure if it’s up to the task of a nighttime trail ride. What lighting do you guys ride with/recommend?

PANSIES is right! Night riding is super fun, and the trail is a completely different experience even if you know it like the back of your hand. I run a Mi-Newt (100 lumens) on my handlebar and a Tri-Newt (500 lumens) on my helmet as my primary light. That way I can see great where my head is pointing, and pretty well where my handlebars are pointing. Great for twisty trails where head and bars are heading in opposite directions as you look through corners. NiteRider doesn’t make the Tri-Newt anymore (bastards!) but here’s a link to all kinds of lighting info: http://reviews.mtbr.com/blog/2010-mtbr-lights-shootout/

You probably don’t need 500 lumens up front, but I’m the kid who will accidentally sit on a stranger’s lap in a dark movie theater because my night vision is so crap.

We should go out together some night. All our friends have varying systems--you could check them out and also ride by their ambient light if you haven’t dropped the $$ on your own set-up yet.

Yes! I’m in. By some magic stroke of luck, I happen to have TWO Mi-Newt bulbs because I bought one setup and I found one (bulb only) on the road on my commute one fine day. I tested it and it works. Maybe I’ll see if I can get a battery for that, then one on the bars, one of the head, budget style. Why not!

Nice work on the Mi-Newt bulb find! I’ll give you a shout-out next time we go postwork--might be Friday if the rain isn’t too hard, probably either Duthie, Soaring Eagle or Tapeworm.
