Friday Night Velodrome
At the very same time that angry cyclists were battling cranky automobile operators me and the wife were relaxing in the grass at the Marymoor Park Velodrome watching the Friday night track races sipping cold beer and eating hot dogs. And here’s the deal: track racing is awesome! I can’t imagine a cooler place to be on a sunny Friday evening. We caught the FSA Grand Prix and there were all kinds of races with all kinds of people and plenty of action. My favorite race has to be the Miss & Out, also called Devil Take The Hindmost, in which a sizable group of riders take off from the start line and on each lap the last cyclist across the finish line is eliminated. All the action takes place at the back of the pack as racers jockey to stay out of last place. Finally, when the group is down to 5 people (this one started with 15 or 20) they take off into a full single-lap sprint, winner takes all. Exciting stuff.
We saw a several motor-paced Keirin heats, a scratch race, and one really scary crash where three riders hit the deck. Everyone got up eventually but it looked pretty nasty.
Track racing continues all summer so head out to Marymoor for your next Friday happy hour. The beer garden opens at 6:30 and racing begins at 7:00. Check out my slideshow over in the gallery for a good look at the fun.

Couldn’t agree more. I was there Saturday, cheering on my favorite locals, and wishing I had trained for road racing this spring. We witnessed one minor crash, which took a racer from the rush of being in the five-man break on the last lap (of 40), to total and udder rage and disappointment.The Miss & Out was a favorite, and even the kids races were pretty entertaining, and that’s says a lot, coming from me. You should see those kids pedaling at like 150 RPM, and smiling and talking to god-knows-who, even when they are all alone, way off the back. There’s something to be said for the way the world looks to a kid.... maybe that’s why I love riding bikes so much. Gotta go, the Tour’s about to end - go Sastre!
