Another Weekend Mountain Biking in the Northwest

Sunday, like a good pilgrim, I attended the early service at the church of Tiger Mountain. Once again, it was dumping rain. As usual, my faith was tested at the trailhead. Car parked. Warm inside. Windows instantly foggy. Quiet except for the pitter patter of rain on the roof. Wet bikes. Should we go for it? Maybe we should bag it. The parking lot is empty, no one is as dumb as us. I’ve been tempted like this before. As usual, no one wants to be the one to pussy out - so each of us tests the waters with an ambiguous comment.

“Sure is shitty out”

“We could always hit the Colonnade - it’s covered”

“Trails probably all muddy...”

But no one commits to be the guy who presses it, so helmets and gloves are donned, and knobby-tire bikes are begrudgingly mounted. It’s cold. Downpour. This is not the first time I’ve been riding out of the lot in the pouring rain thinking “what a bunch of retards” - I usually say so too. No one responds. Everyone is silent in their misery. 3 miles up fire road to the singletrack. Silence. The cold is soon forgotten as the internal furnaces fire up. Rain-speckled and foggy glasses are stuffed in pockets. What could have been a lazy morning at home is once again transformed into a reason for living.

If you ride in the Northwest, hopefully you’ve figured this out already - if not, you’re missing a lot of riding, waiting around for sunny days. Judging by the vacancies at the Tiger Mountain trailhead, a lot of people are doing just that. Maybe I shouldn’t write this. Here’s the deal. Riding in the rain is fun as hell. The cold? It burns off within 5 minutes. The mud? Love it. Hit the first puddle you see full speed and be done with it. And there’s a bonus - learn to negotiate the roots, rocks, corners and logs when they are all slippery and wet… then come back on a dry day and amaze yourself.

I’ve turned back at the trailhead before when the weather was looking sloppy and the air was cold. Never again. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Once you’re cranking, you’re good to go. It looks miserable out there, I agree. But it’s not. It’ll be our little secret.
